Getting Started
with SPSS
Connect your computer to the network using your network cable and complete the following tasks.
1) Install the SPSS software on your machine:
Students Running Windows (First Years, Sophomores, some Juniors, Seniors):
With the computer logged into Novell on campus and connected with to the network with a
data cable, click on the Application Explorer folder on your desktop. Then click on
Install Software, Academic, SPSS (PASW) 18 Setup.
Students Running Vista (i.e. Juniors who have not had their machine reimaged):
Bring your computer to the Help Desk in the basement of Brother's College and ask for help
in installing SPSS.
Commuter Students:
When you are on campus (in class, for instance) use the network version of SPSS. (You
will need to install it as described above.) In order to access SPSS off-campus, go to
https://vpc.drew.edu and log in using your Drew ID and password. Click on
Academic Applications and SPSS (TS) to enable you to use SPSS.

Save a collection
of data sets onto your C-drive:
Click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and then on the K-drive. You will see a folder for each of the courses that you are enrolled in. Click on the Math 3 folder. You will find a folder called Data2011. Save this folder onto your C drive in a location where you will be able to find it later. This folder contains various data sets that we will use during the semester.
3) Open the SPSS program:
If you created a shortcut on your desktop you can double click on that icon to open the SPSS program. Otherwise, go to All Programs, SPSS Inc and click on PASW Statistics 18. When the program starts up, you will see:
Choose “Don’t show this dialog box in the future” and click OK. You will be queried as to which file you would like to open; click on Cancel. You then will have the SPSS program ready to run. It will look like this:
4) Open the NELS data set found in Data2011 folder in SPSS.
Click File, Open, Data as shown below and then find the Data2011 folder on your C-drive. Select the NELS data set.

Test SPSS by
attempting to use it:
Click on Analyze, Descriptive Statistics, Frequencies.
Click on gender and move it to the variables box by clicking on the arrow. Click OK.
You will see the following SPSS output which will indicate that your SPSS program is correctly installed.
