Mighty Hall of CS Mapping

    CS had quite a variety of maps, as the layout of the town changes.  New buildings pop up, old stores get neglected and fall to ruin.  Hell, even the base layout of roads has changed from the day the game first opened.

    This page is my effort to collect those maps that are informative, not so hard to obtain ICly, and don't give anything away.  Don't expect maps to the secret maze of death under Hanger 18 in the Wastes.  Don't expect a map showing you the way in and the way out of the Underground City.  But anything else?  Sure.  If you have any maps I am missing, please, send them to me.  ICQ them to me.  Something.  I'll put them up.

    First map we have is a lovely old one, dating from the CS website.  Simple map.  Don't know who did it.  Interesting to note that the seperate `Warehouse District' and `Industrial' areas have been lumped together in the past couple of years, geographically.  What it refers to as the Neiki Zone us currently Nirvana... though it points northeast, and Nirvana mainly branches to the northwest.  The arrows heading north and south from the access tunnel are another mystery.  Canyon Zone is Old City, which is full of canyons and ravines, so this is understandable.  Kyudo Zone is Kyudo Hill, a simple stretch.  I've had plans to do some things with Kyudo Hill for some time there.  According to some ancient oldbies, Kyudo Hill was once a whole quest area on its own.  Ryu, the only resident of Kyudo Hill at the time of this writing, offers no further clues.  Anyone with information on Ryu, Kyudo Hill, or even on what the Neiki Zone was, please contact me.

    Second map is also from the old website.  Notice another change in the layout.  Not knowing which of these was created first, I can't comment on the changes in the city.  One particularly cool feature of this geography is the clear west/east seperation.  A few times in CS history, the corp sector has been blocked off.  In theory, and text description, it is well guarded.  But here we have what looks like a pair of access tunnels, which makes a little more sense.  In the southeastern corner of town is the corporate sector.  Or, as they refer to it in this map, CorpTown.  White-collar workers, glimmering skyrises, arcologies, and nice happy smiling faces.  In the southwestern corner of town is the bustling downtown sprawl, full of shady deals and business.  Nothing new there at all.  Up until this point it still resembles current CS.  Then we have the northwestern corner of town... the waterfront.  Now, sure, we could bump Nirvana, Bayfront, some of the northern streets into this....  Makes a little more sense to have a unified waterfront feel for this part of town.  Sounds cool to me.  THEN, and this is the big difference in my mind, we come to the northeastern part of town - Industrial.  By the thicker line present between east and west, and the thinner lines between other regions and Industrial and Corp Town, we can see the way borders are dealt with.  Hell, the two eastern quarters have a thick line around them entirely.  That suggests that we have a blue-collar region, a white-collar region, and BOTH are blocked off from the rest of the city by a pair of access tunnels.  This makes more sense then the current street layout, in my mind.  If a middle management suit from a Megacorp wants to go yell at the manager of the factory, why should he have to be driven from Blumenkraft to High to Hitachi to Hosaka?  *shrug*  On the other hand, this does draw a clear-cut line between rich and poor.  Joe Blow working in the factory isn't going to have easy walk-in access to the gleaming corporate skyrise.  Perhaps the single `Money Wall' isn't so bad.
    Ok, I'm overanalyzing a wee bit.  Blame that on too many literary analysis lectures.
    Anyway, once more there is a huge Canyon Zone.  Based on the southwestern progression of Old City, it looks like not much has changed.  Hell, Quinn made 95% of Old City, and he was one of the founding fathers, so nothing should have changed.  Kyudo Zone seems to be large in this diagram, suggesting a fully developed section of the MOO.  Neiki Zone seems smaller, and directly north from the waterfront region, not northeast from the northeast corner as the current incarnation of Nirvana is.  Not shown in the other map, but shown here, are the Eastern Wastes.  Gilmore, another old name from the history of CS, built this section's gridwork.

    The third map is by far the best.  This map was recently created by Boy, a former programmer on the MOO.  While there are a few mistakes, this map is the most accurate I've seen.  Get it now, before it becomes as obsolete as the ones listed above.  It was created in an adobe acrobat format, a format I hate but am learning to live with.

    The fourth map is a simple child of note.  Found it in Vertigo's gear, Zeno's listed as the owner.  *shrug*  Here goes:

Gates of Night City

    Hmmm.. what's changed....  Well, 23rd Police is no longer there.  We've gone from NCPD to NCSP, with a few incarnations of each and the NCSD along the way.  Go's still there.  Karpov's still there.  Across from the Park is no longer an apartment complex.  Alot of newer things are missing, obviously.  The gate to the Eastern Wastes is omitted.  But the street names are closer to the current layout then the older maps above, so I'm guessing that this is a newer one.  But - notice not only the lack of Kyudo Zone, but not even a note about the hill that's currently there now.  Interesting.

    The fifth map, which I know quite a few oldbies still have saved, is a map of the Eastern Wastes.

    Notice once more the differences.  The Ranger Station is no more.  The shack is totally different.  The truck that currently roams the wastes is much different in nature.  And, hell, there's alot more out there now.  Even the ancient island to the north of the central part of the wastes is missing.  The hills back then didn't have any mountain lions... Players couldn't drive around like maniacs out there...  heheh.....  How things change.

    I know this is a no-brainer, but the sixth map is the help map message, as of October 1999.

    Notice how different that is from earlier maps.  Many more buildings built, different sub regions attached (whole new sewer areas, Underground City, Nirvana, etc.), the dark alley system north of XS, the Sacrifice Zone, etc.  Wowsers.
    Basic grid (corpers southeast, Eastern Wastes east, ocean north) never changes.  But small subtle changes, those are quite interesting.
