Role models
Oscar (and the bus)
Our 16 year old "security guard" who quit school in 1999 to work. |
Antonio Mejia.
Bus driver and fellow volunteer. |
........ |
Cecilia, Wendy, and Brenda |
When we got to the worksite,
Oscar and Antonio watched for about a minute and then got in the line with
us, passing bricks and carrying sand and rocks up to the building site.
When Neysa commented on Oscar's strength to Antonio, Antonio said "No one
in Honduras is strong, the food we eat is not nourishing enough for that.
Hondurans are strong in the heart and will. That makes up for our
lack of physical strength."
Both Antonio and Oscar lost their homes in Hurricane Mitch, and although
they still live in rented houses, they worked alongside us to build houses
for their fellow countrymen. |
|
The blocks were almost as big as the kids
and some of them could barely hold the cinder blocks when they joined us
in the line, but they, too, stepped in to help us haul building material
up that hill--and to inspire and encourage us when we were tired.
