Reflections of a Puddle

Just for once, keep it out -

I’d like to see it

You think I’m terrible, I don’t doubt

But it’s from you I want to know this

And standing here

In the pouring rain

You’re more cruelly beautiful

Than I could have ever been.

Thinking we would be easy -

That was my mistake.

But please don’t think the same of me

And what you’d planned to take,

My heart, my self and all that lies between

The empty pavement

Separating me from you,

If I promise not to make a scene.

“Will you do me a three-month favor

And pretend the puddles are a million people…”

I want to whisper this to you

Through the tears the sky and I weep --

“Audiences like happy endings.”
