We spent most of the night together,
You and I.
You looked so nice in your suit and tie,
Hair carefully combed and parted.
You claimed you were just waiting
You’d be off in a couple of minutes
But you stayed – I knew you would – You always do
Only this time something caught your eye
She was so much prettier than I was – she was almost glowing
And I thought there’d be no competition for a moment
You’d be gone and I’d stay here, waiting for you to come back—
Almost hoping you wouldn’t
Because I thought you deserved something nice for a change.
But instead, you stayed, watching her from a distance, turning away
Whenever you thought someone might see us together.
I saw her start over towards you – you thought I didn’t notice, but I saw.
You knew you had a chance
But you stayed – like the dumb loyal creature you are
Shy and all alone
Talking to the wall.
