This course combines practice and instruction in essay writing with a study of the essay form from the classical era to the present day. We will analyze a range of essay forms and styles to help us develop a sense of what works and why, but the emphasis of the course is the student writing. Students will experiment with a variety of essay forms by writing one essay a week for the first eight weeks of the course, and part of each class will be a writer's workshop where we discuss the essays and strategies for revision. The final part of the course will focus on revision and refocusing essays, and at the end of the course students will compile a portfolio of their four best essays.  I will invite students to submit their best essay (by their definition) for publication in the course journal at the end of the semester.
