MEDHM 702 Studies in Psychoanalysis: Freud: Clinician and Philosopher
Prof. A. Johan Noordsji
Tues. 4:00 – 6:30 p.m.
3 credits. Readings from the work of Freud, in chronological order, will be assigned to convey the evolution of his thought. Part of the readings will be chosen from his clinical papers to illustrate how Freud proceeded from clinical description, via clinical conceptualization, to his metapsychology. Freud’s interpretation of art, morality and religion derives from analogous application of his metapsychological concepts to culture. Extension of the drive theory to include Thanatos transformed Freud’s work into a philosophy of Mankind.
