Critical thinking requires us to move beyond egocentric
attitudes and perceptions. In this seminar we
consider the following questions: How can we learn
to unblock critical faculties and to expand capacities for perception and
abstract thought? What are the possible connections between rational
(scientific) knowledge and intuition? How might we take a more
active role in our own education, as producers and integrators (instead
of simply as consumers and assimilators) of knowledge? We take a
nontraditional approach to such questions. Reading materials include
Pirsig's Zen
and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Kabat-Zinn's Wherever
You Go, There You Are and Ruggiero's The Art of Thinking.
