SPAN 139—WAR AND IMAGINATION: THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR IN LITERATURE AND ARTS

MW  1:05-2:20       BC 215         FALL  2003

This course is highly recommended for those qualified students who will be participating in the January 2004 Drew International Seminar (DIS) in Spain on this topic.

Description of topic:  The defining event of 20th-century Spain and a prelude to Europe’s Second World War, the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), captured world attention and the imagination of creative artists. The present course studies the results of this engagement with and reflection on the war expressed in literature, art, music, and film.  Selected works will be examined through the lens of this troubled historical context often showing the public rhetoric of war and propaganda as well as private suffering and loss.

Description of course content:

·         Course will begin with attention to the sociopolitical and historical contexts that inform the literary and artistic selections chosen for the class.  Principal sources will include the Trevor and Ranzato texts, internet sites, and the film, The Spanish Civil War (Granada TV).

·         There will be a series of guest speakers addressing the historical background on Wednesdays at 5-6 pm in BC215 ( see attached). A short summary essay is due for at least three of these lectures.

·         Literary selections show the experience of war in different geographical areas (Madrid, Barcelona, Aragon, Andalucía) and its expression in narrative, fictional autobiography, drama and poetry).  A short 2-3 page analytical essay due after each reading.

·         Films will be shown on Drew TV, in class or at other times.  At least three commercial films must be seen in addition to the extended 6-hour SCW film by Granada TV.  Responses and discussions of these films will take place on Blackboard. Participation will be monitored during the semester.

·         Both Picasso’s painting, Guernica, and the poster art of the period will be studied as art initiated by war.

·         Music as a strategy for maintaining morale, increasing sense of solidarity and partisanship will be examined through lyrics of songs, adaptations, and hymns.
