Adoption of the Agenda:
The agenda was adopted.
Approval of the Previous Minutes:
Minutes were approved.
Chair's Report:
The proposed Senate Constitution has made the rounds of all
constituencies. Discussions appear to be favorable. The
Governance
Committee has received some suggestions, particularly from the Graduate
Student Association, the Student Government Association, the College
of
Liberal Arts and the Theological School, and the suggestions have been
incorporated. Cathy Messmer's leadership of the meeting was very
helpful,
and Lessie Culmer-Nier made useful revisions. If the changes
are approved
at this meeting, the proposed Constitution will go to all eight
constituencies in the spring semester for a vote, and then to the Board
of
Trustees for acceptance at their May meeting.
The next meetings of the University Senate are:
Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000,
4:15, Founders Room
Thursday, May 4, 2000, 4:15,
Wendel Room.
Senate Committee Report -- Governance Committee:
There have been two major changes, one concerning the Financial Exigency
clause and the second, the balance of student representation.
The responsibility of determining whether a condition of financial exigency
exists will rest with the Board of Trustees, in consultation with the
existing membership of the Resources and Revenues and the Expenditures
and
Allocations Committees. The Senate will then be responsible for
establishing the Committee on Financial Exigency.
The Graduate Student Association and the Theological School Association
requested that the SGA representation be more closely parallel to their
own. Consequently, the Student Government Association will be
represented
by two full senators, and one alternate with no voice or vote.
Edye Lawler called the question, Charles Wetzel moved for approval,
and
Wendy Kolmar seconded the motion. The revised Constitution was
accepted
unanimously. Thomas Magnell reminded the Senate that the Constitution
must
be voted upon in its current state by all constituencies. Senators
may
request assistance from the Governance Committee in presenting the
Constitution to their constituencies.
President's Report:
President Kean reported that several searches are actively under way
for
important University positions, including Director of the Library,
Dean of
Student life and Vice President/Dean of the Theological School.
More than forty million of the sixty-two million dollar goal of the
capital
campaign has come in, with some very large gifts from alumnae/i.
Drew has
received more million dollar gifts in the last year than in its entire
history. Alan Rosan asked what would happen if we exceeded the
campaign
goal, and President Kean responded that we would reset the target.
He also
warned that the campaign may slow slightly at this point, since the
strongest prospects tend to respond first.
Meeting adjourned at 5:49.
Respectfully submitted,
Jody L. Caldwell, Secretary
Return to University Senate 1999-2000
