OTTO MADURO  

Professor of World Christianity at Drew University. Former chair of the Doctoral Program in Religion and Society in its Graduate School (1995-1997); former and current chair of the Division of Church and Society in its Theological School (1997-1999; 2001-        ); currently co-chair of its Hispanic Institute of Theology (since 1997), as well as co-founder & co-convener (also with Dr. Ada María Isasi-Díaz) of its Hispanic Doctorate of Ministry. He has two M.A.s and a Ph.D., all magna cum laude—from the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium). He has been Visiting Professor, among others, at the USC School of Religion, Maryknoll School of Theology, Union Theological Seminary, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Notre Dame, and at his alma mater in Louvain, too. Otto has over a hundred articles published in a dozen languages in journals of all continents; besides  five books in other languages (one, Marxismo y Religión, was Best Essay of the Year, 1977-1978, in Venezuela; another, Mapas para la Fiesta, is his last and has just been reprinted  by AETH in Decatur, GA), his books in English include Religion and Social Conflicts (Orbis 1982—also in German, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish), and the edited volumes Judaism, Christianity, and Liberation (Orbis 1991), The Future of Liberation Theology (Orbis 1989), and Expanding the View (Orbis 1990). He is associate editor of the JAAR, Social Compass, Cristianismo y Sociedad, Concilium, SIC, Liaisons Internationales, and the Journal of Hispanic/Latino Theology. He is a council member of PARAL, the SSSR, and formerly, of the ASR. In 1997 he was given the Will Herberg Distinguished Professor Award by the Graduate Students’ Association of Drew University. He is currently directing and involved in a field research project on Latina/o Pentecostal Congregations in Newark, New Jersey.
