From Tom Harris, reporting on Trustees' Meeting: "During the meeting, President Tom Kean informed the trustees that Drew has received a grant of $5 million from the State of New Jersey's Economic Development Authority. The money is restricted, but will allow a music wing to be added to the new Dorothy Young Center for the Arts." |

Drew Receives Largest Gift Ever For Arts Center MADISON -- Drew University broke ground April 5 for its new 57,000 square foot arts building which will be named for benefactor Dorothy Young....She is a former stage assistant to magician Harry Houdini, an actress, dancer, author, and artist. Drew awarded her an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in 1995.... $1.55

At their meeting on October 13, the Board of Trustees formally approved an $18.7 million budget for the new arts building. This OK should mean that the budget should be enough (we hope, we hope) to build the building we've planned AND that ground-breaking and the beginning of construction will be this coming Spring. All of this news is a significant step forward for the project, bringing a little closer to reality. And people think that Friday the 13th means bad luck!!! At the 2000 DUDS Ball, the department faculty received their first ever group Cheekie--a special given for the greatest obsession of the year. Our obsession? The new arts building, of course. The design is being finalized, and the present schedule has project bidding done by January, ground-breaking in the spring, and completion for the Fall 2002 semester. Cost (as in too much) is a concern, but we're hoping we can make it to the completion phase with what we now have planned intact. We'd like to plan some kind of gala opening, to which we hope many, many alumni/ae will come. This new building will be your building too; we wouldn't have it without the contributions alums have made through the years to make the department what it is. |
