My interests are tied to the courses I teach. I am what may be called a peninsularist meaning that I study the literature and culture of Spain. This includes its early history, literature and culture up to the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). I am most involved with Spain's Golden Age that occurred during the 16th and 17th centuries. I especially enjoy extending learning by taking appropriate field trips. When teaching a course that includes any of the Spanish Don Juan plays for example, I try to schedule a visit to see Don Giovanni at the Metropolitan Opera or the New York State Opera (last visit was fall, 2002). This spring (2003) the Don Quixote class went to see Man of La Mancha at the Martin Beck Theater. Since Drew is 45 minutes from NY we have een able to visit the Sephardic Synagogue, the Jewish Heritage Museum, the Cloisters, the Hispanic Society, NYU's King Juan Carlos Center for films and lectures, and we go regularly to the Spanish Repertory Theater.
