SYLLABUS
Close reading and discussion of the novel by Miguel de Cervantes as a compendium
of traditional Spanish and European literary forms and of the ways in which
he produced them from what many consider the first modern novel.
SPAN 108B/Spanish in Performance: Spanish Theater (2)
Reading, discussion and bench performance of comic and serious short plays
in Spanish. Attention will be on improving pronunciation, intonation and dramatic
expression and may include writing and performing of an original skit. Plays
by authors such as Paloma Pedrero, García Lorca, Cervantes, Julio Mata.
No prior experience in theater is required.
SPAN 108A/Spanish in Performance: Hispanic Film and Society (2)
A study of Spanish and Latin-American films concentrating on contemporary
issues of their cultures and societies. Some text-based materials such as
screen plays, fiction, and reviews, as well as screenings of films, provide
the basis for discussion of themes relevant to film as industry and as artistic
production. Will include films by directors such as Buñuel, Berlanga,
Almodóvar, Rodríguez.
SPAN 135/Constructing Spain: Conquest, Reconquest and the Inquisition

SYLLABUS
A study of ethnic diversity in early Spain representing Arabic, Jewish and
Christian cultures and of the Inquisition as a form of resistance to a pluralistic
national identity. Readings will include particular expressions of ethnicity
such as Mozarabic poetry, Sephardic narratives, epic poetry and ballads as
well as documents of and responses to the Inquisition.
SPAN 137/Love, Sex, and Spirituality in Early Modern Spain (4)
SYLLABUS
This course will study the theme of love--both human and divine--in poetry,
drama, and narrative from the late fifteenth to the early seventeenth century.
This period coincides with Spain's unification and its imperial enterprises
in the New World and Europe, as well as the Counter Reformation. In poetry,
drama and fictional narrative the love of wo(man) and of God found simultaneous
expression in this tumultuous historical context of earthly and spiritual
concerns. Authors may include Fernando de Rojas, Garcilaso de la Vega, Fray
Luis de León, San Juan de la Cruz, Santa Teresa, María de Zayas,
Cervantes.
SPAN 138/Contextualizing Gender in Nineteenth-Century Spain (4)
SYLLABUS
A study of gender roles and their permutations in Spanish literature and other
cultural productions from the Romantic period to the turn of the century.
Works to be read may include plays such as Don Juan Tenorio, and the fiction
of Pérez Galdós and Emilia Pardo Bazán.
SPAN 139/War and Imagination: The Spanish Civil War in Literature
and Art (4)
SYLLABUS
The defining event of 20th-century Spain and a prelude to Europe's 2nd World
War, the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), captured world attention and the imagination
of writers. Course will study the artistic production (literature, art and
music) in Spain and Spanish America which show the rhetoric of war and propaganda.
Authors may include Manuel and Antonio Machado, Neruda, Vallejo, and Alberti.
