Toni Ann Corsi, major: Political Science
As
an Italian-American, learning about the Italian culture and studying
the language has always been one of my interests. Studying Italian throughout
high school and being a member of my school's Italian club inspired me
to pursue the language at the college level. Drew's Italian program has
been influential to my career goals and aspirations and I benefit greatly
by minoring in the language. Not only do I enjoy learning about the Italian
culture in the classroom setting, but I have furthered my interest by
becoming a member of Drew's Italian club, C.I.A.O.
Terry Kidner, Ph.D, auditor
I'm
now taking my sixth semester of Italian as a "Community Auditor." I
minored in French and German in college; as a retired academic, Italian
has been my dessert, as it were--a luminous language that engages
so many other disciplines: literature; philosophy; art history; music, film
and theatre. E.M. Forster writes that "Italian in the mouths
of Italians is a deep-voiced stream . ..." I'm not there
yet (and may never manage the 'deep-voiced' part!), but I've loved
every minute of trying.
Kelly Morgan, double major: History and Psychology
The
Italian culture and language has always been a source of interest for
me. After several years of study at the high school level, I pursued
the Italian minor in hopes to extend my knowledge of the culture and
language to my fullest potential. Drew's Italian program offers many
opportunities, both intellectual and social, to the minors.
Philip Herro, major: Economics
After
taking Italian during the first semester of my freshman year I realized
that it was something I wanted to stick with. At that time they were
working on making Italian a minor and when it finally was I knew that's
what I wanted to do. I have learned more than just a language. I have
learned about a wonderful culture filled with wonderful people and a
great history. Even if for nothing else knowing Italian is always a plus
with the ladies.
Casilda Rodriguez, major: Spanish
I
have a minor in Italian because I love the language and I think it is
very romantic. The culture is very interesting and different. I especially
love the art and the literature. After I visited Italy I felt inclined
to study Italian once I got to college and I am very happy that I did.
Norma Hobbs, major: French
I
have chosen to study the Italian because I am passionate about learning
foreign languages. I find that by studying a language, one not only learns
how to communicate with others in a new manner, but one also indirectly
learns the culture associated with the people who speak the language.
Having studied other romance languages, Italian seemed to me like a natural
next step in furthering my appreciation of foreign languages. I am impressed
by the Italian department at Drew and appreciate the passion the professors
have for their students to immerse themselves in their study of the language.
Karolina Gutierrez, double major: Spanish and Italian
First of all, I am taking Italian because it's my
second major as well as Spanish. I love to learn different languages
and cultures. Personally, I think it is very important to be able
to communicate with others in different languages. Also, I want to
be able to give back to my community by helping them if I am needed
for my language skills.
