Barcelona’s origins go back more than 2,500 years when Phoenicians and Carthaginians settled in the area and chose to have a commercial port. The name of Carthaginian ruler Amilcar Barca is often referred to as the origin of the name Barcino, later used by the Romans.

Barcelona offers a vast array of cultural institutions, museums and, historical sites as well as access to beach resorts and culinary excellence. It is one of the most cosmopolitan cities of the European Union and within Spain it is considered the most prosperous and industrialized region of the peninsula. Barcelona, the capital of Cataluña boasts its own language and unique historical development. It is home to some of the 20th century’s most creative and influential artists such as Picasso, Dalí, Gaudí, and Miró.

We want our students to know this thriving metropolis and the major trends in Spanish art and culture, as well as to have a closer look at Spain’s impressive artistic legacy and daily life.
