Brief Bio

Currently Associate Professor of Spanish, Language Coordinator, and Chair of European Studies minor at Drew University, Madison, New Jersey, Mónica Cantero has taught previously at Berry College, McPherson College, and Reed College. She has directed the European Semester in Brussels and is the director for the Barcelona Summer Language and Culture intensive program. She is also a member of IPrA, MLA, and NeMLA.

Mónica Cantero has published on the areas of Linguistics (Spanish Word-Formation, Pragmatics, Gender and Language) and Contemporary Spanish Cinema (Pedro Almodóvar, Alex de la Iglesia, Iciar Bollaín, Llorenç Soler, Guillermo del Toro, etc.) She is particularly interested in the crossroads of images and linguistic representation of ideology (identity, violence, and immigration) in the filmic discourse. More recently she has begun working in visual studies: El discurso de la inmigración en el cine hispano: tragedias personales y realidades sociales; Combining visual form and meaning: Multimodal representations and pragmatic function in word-formation.

Her great passions - Spanish Film and Linguistic theories - are also her profession and consider herself to be fortunate to bring this knowledge into her classroom.
