Elizabeth's life has never gone through so much turmoil, and the intensity and frequency of emotions she continues to experience has begun changing her. Not so quick to trust and love everyone entering her life blindly, she is beginning to use more discernment in her position as Guardian. The death of her second teacher and her friend Angela hit her particularly hard, as did the departure of her beloved Eric.
Elizabeth understands that Eric was compelled to put his life into order by searching out his father and coming to terms with the man; but it has been nearly six months now with no word from Eric, and Elizabeth has been forced to the realization that, willingly or not, her lover and the father of her unborn baby has in effect abandoned her. With time, she has accepted the loss of the man who fathered her child, and who took her heart with him when he left, but she has not been unchanged. She is less quick to display her emotions now, and more determined than ever to fulfil her responsibilities as the Lady's Guardian. She is moving forward, leaving the childish, romantic dreams of her younger self behind. Still, with Lucy and Shane's deep and abiding love coming to fruition, Elizabeth sometimes still experiences sharp reminders of the doors in her life that have closed. Her resolve, however, is not shaken. Elizabeth will persevere, and she will continue to serve her Lady.
In addition to Eric's unborn baby, Elizabeth also carries a second child. Forced by a combination of magic and brutality to conceive, she unwillingly bears what she prays is the reincarnated soul of her beloved teacher, John Twofeathers. She fears what thing, perhaps what monstrous thing, may be growing inside of her, and she fears what the presence of the second, un-looked-for child may do to the soul and spirit of the child of her body. Her prayers to the Lady for reassurance have gone unanswered, and Elizabeth is waiting, as calmly and serenely as she can manage, for the children - her children - to come to term.
